✪ ART CLASSES ✪

At the Hootenanny Art Annex we see the child as competent and capable and we believe that learning is social and collaborative. The art studio is a space where children come to create, explore, and experience themselves through art. We value open ended materials and take an approach that values the creative process over a uniform product. No two artworks look the same here just as no two children are the same! In our younger kids classes adults are encouraged to support their children by helping them achieve their goals rather than by doing the work for them. With this belief in the capability of children we are helping them to become resilient, lifelong creative thinkers! This belief in each child's unique expression carries over into our older kids classes, where we delve into specific crafts and skills such as textiles, drawing, and photography.

The teacher supports and facilitates these investigations in a nurturing environment. Toddler Art Play is a hands-on sensory art class that supports fine and gross motor skills, problem solving skills, and social interaction. We use paints and doughs, play with water beads and kinetic sand, squish colorful shaving cream, pop painted bubble wrap, paint murals, mix up flower play potions, explore “creative tables”, work with color, line and form, light and shadow, and work both collaboratively and independently. Toddler Art Play is a magical mix of art, play, and socialization.

Ages 2-4

New Family $305
Returning Family $295
Sibling $200

M-W 9:45-10:30am

Our Winter session of Make & Explore is all about Nature Art! It might be getting too cold to play in the park every day, but we’ll have fun bringing the outdoors in with Mother Nature as our muse. We will create artworks out of materials including snow, pinecones, evergreen branches, seashells, bark and sand! We’ll make our own watercolors from flower petals, use nature brushes to create textured paintings, learn about mandalas using clay and flowers, create spin art on pressed leaves and even have fun mixing up flower potions!

Each Make & Explore class begins with a seated, guided project followed by open-ended exploration of collaborative and sensory art. This is a transitional art class for young children who are advancing from the purely exploratory nature of Toddler Art Play to a more structured class environment in which they are learning to listen to instruction and investigate a new skill. Make & Explore classes contain building blocks to creativity: self-confidence, original thinking and problem solving, exposure to materials, respect, and permission to imagine!

The Basics of Observational Drawing with Amy Myers

Grades 3-6

New Family $415

Sat 3-5pm

This beginners class will develop the fundamentals of drawing from observation.  When most people draw, they are referencing an image in their head rather than actually seeing what is directly in front of them.  We tend to draw from preconditioned mental patterns, bypassing the rich and dense environment we live in.  This series of classes will begin to breakdown the preconceived ideas of what an object looks like in order to gain a direct observational response. It is an exciting and empowering moment to engage with reality via drawing from personal observations.
We will delve into the function and definitions of line and line quality, contour, shape, negative space / positive space, and proportion.
We will be drawing hands as well as traditional still life objects. This class will build mental focus and visual stamina as we develop the ability to coordinate the mind and hand in fun and easy to grasp techniques.
Key Terms: Contour, Blind contour, Line, Line weight, Negative space/Positive space, Boundary, Shape

Creative Table with Hannah (Fall)

Pre-K - 1st grade

New Family $370
Returning Family $360

With each Creative Table class the work surface is composed as a “tablescape” of intriguing materials set up in an aesthetically inviting manner with materials chosen intentionally as creative prompts. With guidance and instruction on how to use tools and materials, students are tasked with finding ways to create with what they find. This class combines art making with imaginative play while using both traditional and unexpected materials. Picture for example a moss-covered work surface arranged with wood blocks, acorns, twigs, hammers, clay and a rainbow of paint colors. What might your child create? What conversations might be overheard as they compose a fairy house or a rock garden? Each week features a unique tablescape. Working side by side will foster collaboration and dialogue. The mixed media open-ended nature of this class leads to limitless possibilities for creative decision making both in 2-D and 3-D arts. This after school session also includes time for studies of underrepresented artists and art journaling.

Print & Play with Recycled Materials with Melina (Fall)

In our Fall Session of Print & Play we will use all kinds of recycled materials.
